Summary

The Spectralis optical coherence tomography (OCT) fixation target can create a cross-shaped autofluorescence artifact in the macula. This artifact was not observed with other OCT devices, suggesting a device-specific issue.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if the cross-shaped fixation target of the Spectralis SD-OCT instrument causes a cross-shaped autofluorescence artifact.

Main Methods:

  • Thirty eyes from 15 healthy volunteers were imaged.
  • Spectralis SD-OCT was used, followed by fundus autofluorescence imaging.
  • Confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscope (cSLO) imaging (infrared reflectance and MultiColor) was also performed.
  • Comparisons were made with Cirrus HD-OCT 5000 and RTVue XR Avanti.

Main Results:

  • A cross-shaped increase in macular autofluorescence was observed in all eyes after Spectralis SD-OCT acquisition.
  • This artifact pattern was also visible on cSLO infrared reflectance and MultiColor imaging.
  • No autofluorescence pattern changes were seen after using Cirrus HD-OCT 5000 or RTVue XR Avanti.

Conclusions:

  • The Spectralis SD-OCT fixation target can induce a specific autofluorescence artifact.
  • This artifact is not present with other OCT devices, highlighting a potential Spectralis-specific phenomenon.
  • Further research is needed on the implications of photopigment consumption by the Spectralis fixation point.
