Ultrasound elastography is objective for hydatid cyst (HC) diagnosis but cannot differentiate HC types. A 4-mm region of interest (ROI) showed reliable correlation between strain index (SI) and HC types, with no significant interobserver differences.
Area of Science:
- Medical Imaging
- Diagnostic Ultrasound
- Parasitology
Background:
- Hydatid cyst (HC) diagnosis relies on imaging, with ultrasound elastography (USE) emerging as a promising technique.
- Differentiating HC types is crucial for treatment and prognosis, but current methods have limitations.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the efficacy of ultrasound elastography in differentiating hydatid cyst (HC) types.
- To assess the impact of region of interest (ROI) size (4 mm vs. 8 mm) and interobserver variability on HC elastography measurements.
Main Methods:
- Patients with hydatid cysts (HC) underwent ultrasound elastography (USE).
- Strain index (SI) was calculated using two different ROI sizes (4 mm and 8 mm) by two independent radiologists.
- Statistical analyses were performed to assess interobserver agreement and correlation between SI, HC types, and ROI size.
Main Results:
- No significant difference in HC strain index (SI) was observed between the two radiologists or between the 4-mm and 8-mm ROI sizes.
- No statistically significant difference was found in SI values among different HC types when analyzed by interobservers or different ROI sizes.
- The highest correlation between HC types and ROI sizes was observed with a 4-mm ROI.
Conclusions:
- Ultrasound elastography (USE) is an objective technique for HC assessment, showing no significant interobserver variability in SI values.
- While a 4-mm ROI demonstrated reliable correlation between SI and HC types, USE is not currently appropriate for differentiating specific HC types.
