Late diagnosis of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) increases illness and death. Routine HIV testing in general medical admissions significantly boosts testing rates, unlike staff education alone, leading to its implementation in a Milton Keynes hospital.

Findings:

  • HIV test coverage on the MAU increased after the implementation of routine HIV testing.
  • Staff education alone did not lead to an increase in MAU HIV test coverage.
  • The findings supported the implementation of routine HIV testing on the MAU.

Implications:

  • Routine HIV testing in general medical admissions can improve early HIV diagnosis rates.
  • Implementing routine testing strategies is crucial for addressing missed testing opportunities in healthcare settings.
  • This approach can help reduce HIV-related morbidity and mortality by facilitating timely treatment initiation.
