  • To compare the impact of disciplinary versus traditional discussions on historical argument writing for students with or at risk for LD.
  • To assess the long-term effects of disciplinary discussions on historical thinking and writing.

Main Methods:

  • 39 sixth and seventh graders with or at risk for LD participated.
  • Students were divided into two groups: disciplinary discussion (n=19) and traditional discussion (n=20).
  • Historical argument essays were analyzed for knowledge, persuasive quality, and historical thinking.

Main Results:

  • Disciplinary discussion group showed statistically higher scores in historical knowledge (partial η² = .23).
  • Essays from the disciplinary group demonstrated superior persuasive quality (partial η² = .43) and historical thinking (partial η² = .40).
  • Delayed posttest (8 weeks) confirmed sustained improvements in historical writing sophistication for the disciplinary group (partial η² = .19).

Conclusions:

  • Disciplinary discussions are more effective than traditional discussions for enhancing historical argument writing in students with LD.
  • While disciplinary literacy shows promise, challenges persist for struggling learners in meeting advanced academic standards.
