Summary

Recombinant alpha 2a interferon effectively controls platelet counts in essential thrombocythaemia patients long-term. This therapy demonstrated good tolerability and safety, with no major bleeding or clotting events observed.

Background:

  • Recombinant interferons (alpha 2a, 2b, 2c) show short-term efficacy in thrombocythaemia and related myeloproliferative disorders.
  • Limited data exist on the long-term maintenance use of recombinant interferons for thrombocythaemia.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate recombinant alpha 2a interferon as a maintenance therapy for essential thrombocythaemia.
  • To assess the long-term efficacy and safety of this treatment in previously untreated patients.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 22 previously untreated essential thrombocythaemia patients received recombinant alpha 2a interferon maintenance therapy.
  • Treatment duration was a minimum of 6 months.
  • Platelet counts, haematological toxicity, and thrombotic/haemorrhagic events were monitored.

Main Results:

  • Effective long-term control of platelet counts was achieved in 19 out of 22 patients (86%).
  • No evidence of significant haematological toxicity was observed.
  • No objective haemorrhagic or thrombotic events occurred during 298 patient-months of therapy.
  • Three patients (14%) discontinued therapy due to adverse side-effects.

Conclusions:

  • Recombinant alpha 2a interferon is an effective and safe maintenance agent for essential thrombocythaemia.
  • The therapy provides sustained control of platelet counts with a favorable safety profile.
