The NutriQoL questionnaire reliably measures health-related quality of life for patients on home enteral nutrition (HEN). It demonstrates good reproducibility and responsiveness to changes in patient health status.
Area of Science:
- Medical Assessment
- Patient-Reported Outcomes
- Nutritional Support
Background:
- Home enteral nutrition (HEN) requires tools to assess patient well-being.
- Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is a crucial outcome for HEN patients.
- Existing HRQoL tools may not be specific to the needs of HEN patients.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the reliability and responsiveness of the NutriQoL questionnaire.
- To determine if NutriQoL can accurately measure HRQoL in HEN patients.
- To assess the minimal clinically important difference (MCID) for NutriQoL.
Main Methods:
- Two cohorts of HEN patients and caregivers were enrolled for reliability and responsiveness assessments.
- Test-retest reliability was assessed using intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC).
- Responsiveness was evaluated using standardized effect size and standardized response mean, with MCID estimation.
Main Results:
- NutriQoL demonstrated good test-retest reliability (ICC >0.75) and internal consistency.
- Excellent agreement was found between patient and caregiver global NutriQoL scores.
- A mean MCID of 0.63 (11.51) was reported for patients with minimal health changes.
Conclusions:
- NutriQoL is a reliable and unique instrument for measuring HRQoL in HEN patients.
- The questionnaire can detect changes in patient health status.
- Further research is recommended to fully establish the responsiveness of NutriQoL.
