This study introduces an interactive WebGIS system for visualizing cancer and environmental data. The system empowers users to create personalized maps, fostering a two-way flow of information for better cancer analysis.
Area of Science:
- Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
- Public Health Informatics
- Environmental Epidemiology
Background:
- Traditional disease data presentation relies on statistics, limiting public understanding.
- Existing media efforts to raise disease awareness often lack accessible visualization tools.
Purpose of the Study:
- To design an interactive WebGIS system for user-friendly cancer and environmental data mapping.
- To enable individuals to generate personalized maps and explore cancer-related information.
Main Methods:
- Developed a WebGIS system for users without GIS expertise.
- Integrated static and interactive maps, including bar and pie diagrams for spatial comparison.
- Utilized Iran's cancer database and meteorological data.
Main Results:
- The system allows users to create personalized web-based Choropleth maps.
- Users can select parameters and algorithms for classification and interactive coloring.
- This innovative approach enhances user engagement with spatial disease data.
Conclusions:
- WebGIS tools can transform information flow from unidirectional to bidirectional.
- Public participation in mapping disease incidence and perceived causes can be enhanced.
- Local knowledge integrated via WebGIS can aid cancer specialists in regional analysis.

Cancer Therapies
However, cancer treatments can pose several challenges, as therapies used to kill cancer cells are generally also toxic to normal cells. Moreover, cancer cells mutate rapidly and can develop resistance to chemical agents or radiation therapy. Besides, all types of cancer cells may not respond to the same therapy. Some cancer cells respond to one...
Cancer-Critical Genes II: Tumor Suppressor Genes
When the function of certain critical genes, especially those involved in cell cycle regulation and cell growth signaling cascades, gets disrupted, it upsets the cell cycle progression. Such cells with unchecked cell cycles start proliferating uncontrollably and eventually develop into tumors.
Such genes that act...
