Background:

  • Treatment adherence is crucial for the effectiveness of disease-modifying therapies in multiple sclerosis (MS).
  • Subcutaneous interferon beta-1a (sc IFN β-1a) is a common treatment for relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS).
  • Electronic devices can monitor and potentially improve treatment adherence.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate long-term adherence to sc IFN β-1a (Rebif®) in RRMS patients using the RebiSmart® electronic device.
  • To assess the impact of the RebiSmart® device on maintaining treatment adherence over a maximum of 36 months.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective, multicentre observational study of 258 RRMS patients using RebiSmart® for sc IFN β-1a treatment.
  • Adherence data (dosage, time, date) were automatically recorded by the RebiSmart® device.
  • Analysis included patients up to 36 months of treatment or until discontinuation.

Main Results:

  • Overall adherence rate was high at 92.6% over the study period.
  • 30.2% of patients achieved 100% adherence, and 80.6% maintained at least 90% adherence.
  • Experiencing relapses at the start of treatment was linked to higher adherence (OR = 3.06).

Conclusions:

  • The RebiSmart® electronic device facilitates high adherence rates to sc IFN β-1a treatment in RRMS patients over 36 months.
  • The device's automated tracking supports consistent medication delivery and potentially better disease management.
  • High adherence suggests improved patient engagement and management of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis.
