Insights
Gaze-based assistive technology (AT) empowers children with severe physical impairments to express agency and develop skills. This technology offers parents hope for their children's improved future and increased life influence.
Area of Science:
- Assistive Technology Research
- Pediatric Rehabilitation
- Human-Computer Interaction
Background:
- Children with severe physical impairments often face challenges in daily activities and communication.
- Gaze-based assistive technology (AT) offers a potential solution for enhancing independence and participation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To explore parents' experiences with children using gaze-based AT in daily life.
- To understand the impact of gaze-based AT on children with severe physical impairments from a parental perspective.
Main Methods:
- Semi-structured interviews conducted twice with parents of eight children with cerebral palsy using gaze-based AT.
- Hermeneutical interpretation used for data analysis to understand parental experiences.
Main Results:
- Parents reported that gaze-based AT enabled children to demonstrate agency, personality, and competencies.
- Children using gaze-based AT showed potential for development and increased influence in their lives.
- The technology provided parents with hope for a better future for their children.
Conclusions:
- Gaze-based AT creates new opportunities for children to engage in activities and initiate communication.
- The technology fosters hope among parents regarding their children's future development and participation.
Objective:
To describe and explore parents' experiences when their children with severe physical impairments receive gaze-based assistive technology (gaze-based assistive technology (AT)) for use in daily life.
Methods:
Semi-structured interviews were conducted twice, with one year in between, with parents of eight children with cerebral palsy that used gaze-based AT in their daily activities. To understand the parents' experiences, hermeneutical interpretations were used during data analysis.
Results:
The findings demonstrate that for parents, children's gaze-based AT usage meant that children demonstrated agency, provided them with opportunities to show personality and competencies, and gave children possibilities to develop. Overall, children's gaze-based AT provides hope for a better future for their children with severe physical impairments; a future in which the children can develop and gain influence in life.
Conclusion:
Gaze-based AT provides children with new opportunities to perform activities and take initiatives to communicate, giving parents hope about the children's future.
