Background:

  • Tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) play a crucial role in anti-tumor immunity.
  • The prognostic significance of TILs in colorectal cancer (CRC) requires further elucidation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prognostic value of TILs in postoperative colorectal cancer patients.
  • To correlate TIL intensity with clinicopathological features of CRC.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of 66 postoperative colorectal cancer patients and 20 control colon segments.
  • Immunohistochemical staining using monoclonal antibodies (LCA, CD3, CD4, CD5, CD8, CD20, CD23, CD138) to identify T and B lymphocytes.
  • Quantification and characterization of TILs in proximity to the primary tumor.

Main Results:

  • Significantly higher numbers of T and B lymphocytes were observed in proximity to cancerous tissue compared to controls.
  • Increased T lymphocyte intensity correlated with larger tumor size, lymph node metastasis, and higher histological grade.
  • Greater TIL intensity near the primary tumor was associated with less advanced colorectal cancer stages.

Conclusions:

  • A direct relationship exists between the immune system and colorectal cancer.
  • The presence of TILs near the primary tumor is a prognostically beneficial factor in colorectal cancer.
  • Findings support the potential application of immunotherapy in colorectal cancer treatment.
