Thiol/disulphide homeostasis may play a role in erectile dysfunction (ED) pathophysiology. While not a sole factor, altered thiol and disulphide levels suggest a link to oxidative stress in ED patients.

- A cohort of 55 male patients aged 40-57 were divided into two groups based on International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5) scores.
- Plasma levels of native thiol, total thiol, and disulphide were measured using a novel automated method.
- Hormone levels, lipid profiles, and HbA1c were also evaluated.
Main Results:
- No significant differences were observed in age, BMI, total testosterone, HbA1c, triglyceride, atherogenic index (AIP), or total cholesterol between groups.
- A weak correlation was found between IIEF-5 scores and native thiol levels.
- Although not statistically significant, patients with ED showed lower native and total thiol levels and higher disulphide levels compared to controls.
Conclusions:
- Thiol/disulphide homeostasis does not appear to be a singular factor in ED pathophysiology.
- However, altered thiol/disulphide balance may contribute to the oxidative stress associated with ED.
- Further research is warranted to elucidate the precise role of thiol/disulphide homeostasis in ED.
