Myopericytoma - a unifying term or a unique entity?

Myopericytoma, a rare benign tumor, presents as a slow-growing nodule. Immunohistochemistry confirmed its origin from perivascular myoid cells, aiding diagnosis.

Observation:
- A case report details a 52-year-old male with a 9-month history of a painless, palpable nodule on the left thumb.
- The 15x12mm mass, located on the thenar aspect, showed soft tissue swelling on X-ray without bony involvement.
Findings:
- Histopathological examination revealed a non-encapsulated, well-circumscribed neoplasm with spindle to ovoid cells and a perivascular arrangement.
- Tumor cells exhibited diffuse smooth muscle actin positivity and negative staining for CD34 and desmin.
- Absence of nuclear atypia, mitotic figures, and necrosis was noted.
Implications:
- Immunohistochemical findings support the origin of myopericytoma from perivascular myoid cells.
- Distinguishing myopericytoma from similar neoplasms like hemangiopericytoma, glomus tumors, myofibroma, and solitary fibrous tumors is crucial.
- Accurate diagnosis is essential for appropriate management of this rare tumor.
