Summary

Higher moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) is linked to better cognitive function in older adults. This study found increased MVPA was associated with a lower risk of cognitive impairment and improved memory and executive function over time.

  • Understanding the impact of different intensities of PA on cognition in older adults is important.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between accelerometer-measured physical activity and cognitive function in older adults.
  • To examine the relationship between moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and incident cognitive impairment.
  • To assess the impact of PA on longitudinal changes in executive function and memory.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized data from the Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke cohort study.
  • Employed accelerometers to objectively measure PA, including MVPA%, light-intensity PA, and sedentary time.
  • Assessed cognitive function using the Six-Item Screener, letter fluency, animal fluency, word list learning, and the Montreal Cognitive Assessment.

Main Results:

  • A dose-response relationship was observed between higher MVPA% and better cognitive outcomes.

  • Future interventions could focus on promoting MVPA to support cognitive health in aging populations.
