Sexually Transmitted Infections01:26

Sexually Transmitted Infections

1.5K
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are diseases transmitted primarily through unsafe sexual interactions. Bacteria, viruses, or parasites cause them and can result in severe health complications if untreated.ChlamydiaThe bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis is responsible for the disease Chlamydia, the most common STI in the United States. This peculiar pathogen requires human cells to reproduce, residing intracellularly. The initial infection often goes unnoticed because it typically does not...

Nursing Assessment of the Genitourinary System I: Health History

536
The genitourinary system is critical to maintaining fluid balance, waste elimination, and reproductive function. Nurses play a vital role in assessing this system, beginning with a thorough health history. This process involves gathering patient information, identifying risk factors, and recognizing symptoms of genitourinary disorders. Early detection is vital for timely interventions and management.1. Gathering Patient InformationA complete health history includes the patient’s personal,...

Urinary Tract Infection III: Diagnostic Studies and Interprofessional Care

386
A healthcare provider can diagnose a urinary tract infection (UTI) through several methods:Medical History and Symptoms: The provider will take a detailed medical history and ask about symptoms such as frequent urination, burning sensation during urination, and lower abdominal pain.Urinalysis: A clean-catch urine sample is collected in a sterile container and tested for the presence of bacteria, white blood cells (leukocytes), nitrites, blood, and protein. The presence of leukocytes and...

Urinary Tract Infection II: Pathophysiology

1.0K
The pathophysiology of urinary tract infections (UTIs) encompasses several progressive stages, beginning with bacterial colonization and culminating in potential systemic complications if untreated. UTIs are primarily initiated by bacteria, such as Escherichia coli, which often originate from the gastrointestinal tract and migrate to the urinary system through the periurethral area. This migration can occur via several routes, including improper hygiene practices, sexual activity, or...

Urine Studies II: Urine Culture and Sensitivity Test

1.8K
A urine culture and sensitivity test is a diagnostic procedure used to identify urinary tract bacterial infections and determine the most effective antibiotics for treatment. This test is generally preferred when a patient shows manifestations of a urinary tract infection, such as frequent or painful urination, cloudy or foul-smelling urine, or lower abdominal pain.Purpose of the TestThe primary goals of a urine culture and sensitivity test are to:Determine the specific bacteria causing the...

Acute Pyelonephritis II: Diagnostic Studies and Management

594
Introduction:For diagnosing acute pyelonephritis, a comprehensive patient history is collected to identify symptoms such as dysuria, frequent or urgent urination, flank pain, or costovertebral angle (CVA) tenderness that may suggest a kidney infection.Physical ExaminationDuring the physical examination, CVA tenderness is assessed. This involves gentle percussion over the costovertebral angle, where tenderness often indicates a kidney infection.Diagnostic TestsUrinalysis: Used to identify white...

    Summary

Gonorrhea rates in Utah surged fivefold by 2014, with increasing infections among women and non-MSM males, suggesting a rise in heterosexual transmission. Public health efforts must focus on screening and treatment for at-risk populations.

    Area of Science:

    • Public Health
    • Epidemiology
    • Infectious Diseases

    Background:

    • Gonorrhea, caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae, is a major public health concern and the second most reported notifiable disease in the US.
    • Untreated gonorrhea can lead to severe long-term health issues, including pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy, infertility, and increased HIV transmission.
    • Effective control strategies depend on early detection and prompt antimicrobial treatment.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To analyze gonorrhea rate trends and demographic shifts in Utah from 2009 to 2014.
    • To identify changes in gonorrhea transmission patterns within the state.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilized data from the Utah National Electronic Disease Surveillance System (UT-NEDSS) for the period 2009–2014.
    • Analyzed statewide gonorrhea case rates and demographic proportions, including sex and sexual orientation.

    Main Results:

    • The statewide gonorrhea rate increased fivefold, reaching 49 cases per 100,000 population in 2014 after a decline from 2009-2011.
    • The proportion of cases among women increased from 21% to 39%, while decreasing among men from 79% to 61%.
    • Among males, the proportion identifying as men who have sex with men (MSM) decreased from 67% to 42% during the study period.

    Conclusions:

    • Demographic shifts indicate a potential increase in heterosexual gonorrhea transmission in Utah.
    • Health departments and providers must enhance screening and treatment for high-risk populations, including women and non-MSM males.
    • Clinicians should be vigilant about rising infection risks in these groups and educate patients on prevention.
