Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) involves local pharyngeal inflammation, indicated by elevated biomarkers. Effective OSA treatment reduced these local inflammatory markers, but systemic inflammation markers in plasma remained unchanged.

- Higher levels of CD4+ T-cells, IL-6, and IL-8 were found in the pharyngeal lavage of OSA patients compared to controls.
- Pharyngeal lavage biomarker levels correlated with the apnoea/hypopnoea index (AHI).
- No significant differences in plasma inflammatory biomarkers were observed between groups, nor a correlation between pharyngeal and plasma markers. Treatment reduced pharyngeal biomarkers but not plasma biomarkers.
Conclusions:
- Patients with OSA exhibit elevated local inflammatory biomarkers in the pharynx.
- Effective OSA treatment, including CPAP or surgery, reduces pharyngeal inflammation.
- Systemic inflammation does not appear to be directly linked to local pharyngeal inflammation in OSA based on this study's findings.
