Area of Science:

  • Audiology and Hearing Rehabilitation
  • Cochlear Implant Technology
  • Speech Processing and Perception

Background:

  • Adult cochlear implant (CI) users often require auditory training (AT) to maximize device benefits.
  • The KTH Speech Tracking Procedure is a clinician-directed method for auditory rehabilitation.
  • Previous research indicates short-term AT yields significant improvements in speech tracking and recognition.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review findings from an 8-week clinician-directed auditory training program using the KTH Speech Tracking Procedure.
  • To illustrate the benefits of intensive, long-term, face-to-face AT with adult CI users.
  • To demonstrate progressive gains in auditory performance and self-perceived confidence.

Main Methods:

  • Review of prior research on an 8-week clinician-directed auditory training (AT) program.
  • Presentation of a detailed case study on intensive, long-term AT using the KTH Speech Tracking Procedure.
  • Assessment of speech tracking rate, sentence recognition, and self-perceived competence.

Main Results:

  • An 8-week AT program resulted in significant gains in speech tracking rate and sentence recognition.
  • A case study showed major, ongoing improvements in tracking rate and sentence recognition with long-term training.
  • Intensive AT led to enhanced self-perceived competence and confidence in adult CI users.

Conclusions:

  • Clinician-directed auditory training using the KTH Speech Tracking Procedure is effective for adult CI users.
  • Both short-term and intensive long-term AT can significantly improve auditory performance and confidence.
  • Widespread clinical adoption of KTH speech tracking is recommended for CI rehabilitation.
