Summary
This study presents the first reported case of ameloblastoma in a pregnant woman in Brazil. The patient underwent successful surgical tumor removal with no recurrence, highlighting effective treatment options for this rare condition.
Area of Science:
- Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
- Oncology
- Reproductive Medicine
Background:
- Ameloblastomas are rare odontogenic tumors, with very few documented cases in pregnant women.
- This report details the first instance of ameloblastoma in a pregnant patient within Brazil.
Observation:
- A 27-year-old pregnant woman presented with a significant ameloblastoma in her right mandible.
- Diagnostic imaging revealed extensive mandibular bone involvement and molar displacement.
- Histopathological analysis confirmed acanthomatous ameloblastoma.
Findings:
- Surgical en-bloc resection followed by maxillomandibular fixation successfully removed the ameloblastoma.
- The patient experienced no post-operative motor deficits or functional impairments.
- One-year follow-up showed no tumor recurrence and evidence of bone regeneration.
Implications:
- The role of pregnancy hormones in ameloblastoma growth requires further investigation.
- En-bloc resection is a viable and effective radical treatment for ameloblastoma, associated with low recurrence rates.
- While the mother's condition was managed, the fetus was diagnosed with alobar holoprosencephaly, warranting further study on potential links.
