Summary

Lateral profile photographs (LPPs) can predict freeway space (FWS) in edentulous patients. This study developed a formula using the Stp-Stg-Stgn angle to estimate FWS, aiding prosthetic rehabilitation.

Main Methods:

  • Fifty-three young edentulous adults (20-27 years) were recruited.
  • Lateral profile photographs were analyzed, marking key soft tissue points (porion, gnathion, gonion) to form the Stp-Stg-Stgn angle.
  • The Stp-Stg-Stgn angle was correlated with FWS measured by swallowing, phonetics, and no command methods using simple linear regression.

Main Results:

  • A significant negative correlation was found between the Stp-Stg-Stgn angle and FWS (r = -0.76, P < 0.001).
  • A prediction formula was derived: FWS (mm) = 11.405 - 0.072 × (Stp-Stg-Stgn angle in degrees).

Conclusions:

  • Lateral profile photographs offer a viable method for determining freeway space (FWS) in edentulous individuals.
  • The derived formula provides a quantifiable approach to predict FWS, assisting dental professionals in prosthetic treatment planning.
