Patch testing for contact allergens may help manage prurigo nodularis. Identifying and avoiding triggers led to significant improvement in some patients with this difficult skin condition.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Allergology

Background:

  • Prurigo nodularis is a chronic, intensely itchy skin condition.
  • Management of prurigo nodularis can be challenging, often requiring a multidisciplinary approach.

Observation:

  • 32 patients with prurigo nodularis underwent patch testing for contact allergen sensitivity.
  • 25 patients (78%) showed relevant positive reactions to specific allergens.

Findings:

  • Follow-up data for 11 patients over 5-14 years revealed disease persistence in 6 and resolution or marked improvement in 5.
  • Three patients who experienced improvement strongly correlated it with avoidance of identified contact allergens.

Implications:

  • Screening for contact sensitivity may be a valuable diagnostic and therapeutic tool for prurigo nodularis.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Identifying and eliminating contact allergens could improve outcomes for patients with refractory prurigo nodularis, especially those with coexisting dermatitis.
