Urine ethanol concentration is higher during hangovers. Lower urine ethanol levels were observed in individuals who claim to be hangover-immune, suggesting a link between ethanol and hangover symptoms.
Area of Science:
- Toxicology
- Human Physiology
- Alcohol Metabolism
Background:
- Alcohol consumption is a common social behavior with known adverse effects.
- Hangover symptoms significantly impair daily functioning.
- Individual differences in hangover susceptibility exist.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the relationship between urine ethanol concentration and the severity of alcohol hangover.
- To compare urine ethanol levels in individuals who regularly experience hangovers versus those who claim to be hangover-immune.
Main Methods:
- A naturalistic study involving 36 healthy social drinkers over a hangover and control day.
- Collection of urine samples at 9:30 am on test days.
- Assessment of overall hangover severity (0-10 scale) and 18 individual symptoms.
Main Results:
- Urine ethanol concentration was significantly higher on hangover days compared to control days (p=0.006).
- Hangover-immune individuals had significantly lower urine ethanol concentrations on hangover days than the hangover group (p=0.027).
- Significant correlations between urine ethanol and various hangover symptoms (nausea, cognitive impairment, fatigue, etc.) were found in the hangover group, but not in the hangover-immune group.
Conclusions:
- Urine ethanol concentration is a significant biomarker associated with the presence and severity of alcohol hangover symptoms.
- Individual differences in hangover experience may be related to variations in ethanol metabolism or excretion.

Ethers can be prepared from organic compounds by various methods. Some of them are discussed below,
Preparation of Ethers by Alcohol Dehydration
In this method, in the presence of protic acids, alcohol dehydrates to produce alkenes and ethers under different conditions. For example, in the presence of sulphuric acid, dehydration of ethanol at 413 K yields ethoxyethane, whereas it yields ethene at 443 K.
