Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the rate of hyperlipidemia detected through workplace screening in previously undiagnosed individuals.
  • To assess the association between workplace hyperlipidemia screening and subsequent medical care utilization.
  • To evaluate changes in lipid profiles among individuals diagnosed with hyperlipidemia post-screening.

Main Methods:

  • A nonexperimental longitudinal study was conducted involving 18,993 employees from 39 self-insured US employers.
  • Lipid profiles (total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglycerides) were measured during screening.
  • Discrete-time survival analysis and paired t tests were used to analyze diagnostic rates and lipid profile changes over one year.

Main Results:

  • Hyperlipidemia was identified in 9.9% (1872) of participants during screening.
  • A significantly higher rate of new hyperlipidemia diagnoses occurred in the first month post-screening (OR: 2.99).

  • Screening positively impacts the management and treatment of hyperlipidemia in an insured workforce.
  • One-year follow-up demonstrated significant improvements in lipid profiles for those identified with hyperlipidemia.
