The formation of teeth, also known as odontogenesis, is a complex process that begins in utero, around the sixth week of embryonic development. There are three stages to this process: the bud stage, the cap stage, and the bell stage.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore the utility of eye-tracking as a novel, objective method for evaluating orthodontic treatment need and outcome.
  • To compare eye-tracking data with traditional assessments of malocclusion from a lay viewpoint.

  • Recorded eye-tracking scanpaths of 88 laypersons viewing facial images (normal, pretreatment, posttreatment malocclusion).

  • SVM classification of eye-tracking features provides a highly accurate method for judging orthodontic treatment need and outcome.
  • This eye-tracking approach offers a promising new tool for objective evaluation of orthodontic treatment from a lay perspective.
