Cognitions and sexual expression in the aging.

Summary

Male sexual confidence and drive are key to sexual expression in aging couples after prostate surgery. Higher male efficacy expectations and sexual drive correlate with increased sexual frequency and better functioning for both partners.

Background:

Aging couples face unique challenges in maintaining sexual expression.
Transurethral prostatectomy (TURP) can impact male sexual function and couple dynamics.
Cognitive factors influencing sexual expression in this demographic are not fully understood.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the relationship between cognitive factors and sexual expression in aging couples where the male partner underwent TURP.
To identify specific cognitive variables that predict sexual expression dimensions.

Main Methods:

A cross-sectional study involving 32 married couples (ages 50-77).
Data collected on cognitive factors: sexual efficacy expectations, value of sex, sexual attitudes, and sexual knowledge.
Sexual expression assessed via couple sexual frequency, desired sexual frequency, and quality of sexual functioning.

Main Results:

Male sexual efficacy expectations and individual sexual drive were strongly correlated with all dimensions of sexual expression.
High male sexual efficacy expectations predicted greater couple sexual frequency and improved sexual functioning for both partners.
High individual male sexual drive predicted increased actual and desired couple sexual interaction.

Conclusions:

Male sexual confidence (efficacy expectations) and drive are crucial predictors of sexual expression in aging couples post-TURP.
Cognitive factors, particularly male-centric ones, play a significant role in maintaining sexual intimacy in later life.
Interventions focusing on enhancing male sexual confidence and drive may improve sexual outcomes for aging couples.
