Summary

Viral infections are common in children with febrile seizures. This study found a higher detection rate of respiratory and enteric viruses in children with febrile seizures compared to healthy controls.

Background:

  • Febrile seizures are common in childhood, often linked to viral infections.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To prospectively detect respiratory and enteric viruses in children experiencing febrile seizures.
  • To compare virus detection rates in febrile seizure patients versus healthy controls.
  • To identify specific viruses strongly associated with febrile seizures.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective study design.
  • Inclusion of 192 children with febrile seizures and 156 healthy age-matched controls.
  • Molecular detection of respiratory and enteric viruses in nasopharyngeal and stool samples.

Main Results:

  • A virus was detected in 72.9% of febrile seizure patients and 51.4% of controls.
  • Influenza, RSV, parainfluenza, human coronavirus, and rotavirus showed the strongest association with febrile seizures.
  • Significantly higher odds ratios for virus positivity were observed in febrile seizure patients compared to controls.

Conclusions:

  • Respiratory and enteric viruses are frequently detected in children with febrile seizures.
  • Specific viruses like influenza and rotavirus are strongly associated with febrile seizures.
  • The type of detected virus did not impact the clinical presentation of febrile seizures.
