Leaky Scanning

5.8K
During most eukaryotic translation processes, the small 40S ribosome subunit scans an mRNA from its 5' end until it encounters the first start AUG codon. The large 60S ribosomal subunit then joins the smaller one to initiate protein synthesis. The location of the translation initiation is largely determined by the nucleotides near the start codon as there may be multiple translation initiation sites present on the mRNA.  Marilyn Kozak discovered that the sequence RCCAUGG (where R...

Scanning Electron Microscopy

5.8K
A scanning electron microscope (SEM) is used to study the surface features of a sample by using an electron beam that scans the sample surface in a two-dimensional manner. Typically, areas between ~1 centimeter to 5 micrometers in width can be imaged. SEM can be used to image bacteria, viruses, tissues as well as larger samples like insects. Conventional SEM gives a magnification ranging from 20X to 30,000X and spatial resolution of 50 to 100 nanometers.

Area of Science:

  • Nursing
  • Mental Health
  • Grounded Theory

Background:

  • Hope is crucial in continuing care settings.
  • Understanding nurses' perspectives on hope is vital for patient well-being.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore concepts of hope from the perspective of registered mental health nurses.
  • To identify core variables influencing hope in a continuing care ward.

Main Methods:

  • Grounded theory approach.
  • Semi-structured interviews with five registered mental health nurses.
  • Analysis of interview transcripts.

Main Results:

  • Identified four core variables: humanistic code, pragmatic knowledge, interpersonal relations, and nurse as a utilizer.
  • Humanistic code involves treating clients as individuals.
  • Pragmatic knowledge encompasses specific interventions nurses use.
  • Interpersonal relations focus on human interaction.
  • Nurse as a utilizer relates to organizational skills.

Conclusions:

  • Nurses actively employ multifaceted strategies to cultivate hope in patients.
  • Maintaining a hopeful demeanor is essential, even when experiencing personal hopelessness.
  • These findings offer insights into enhancing nursing practice in promoting patient hope.
