New azaborine chromophores with a nitrogen-boron-hydroxy (N-BOH) unit exhibit tunable, high luminescence. These materials show strong absorption, sharp fluorescence, and large Stokes shifts in the solid state, overcoming self-quenching.
Area of Science:
- Organic Chemistry
- Materials Science
- Photophysics
Background:
- Azaborine compounds are explored for their unique electronic and photophysical properties.
- Tuning luminescence in organic materials is crucial for advanced applications.
- The influence of specific functional groups on photophysical behavior requires further investigation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To design and synthesize novel heteroaromatic polycyclic azaborine chromophores.
- To investigate the impact of the nitrogen-boron-hydroxy (N-BOH) unit on luminescence properties.
- To compare the performance of N-BOH azaborines with their N-carbonyl analogs.
Main Methods:
- Chemical synthesis of six new azaborine derivatives.
- Spectroscopic analysis including UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence emission.
- Quantum yield measurements in solution and solid state.
- Investigation of Stokes shift properties.
Main Results:
- Successful synthesis of six novel heteroaromatic polycyclic azaborine chromophores.
- Incorporation of the N-BOH unit led to strong visible absorption and sharp fluorescence.
- Efficient quantum yields were observed for the synthesized compounds.
- Significant Stokes shifts were detected in the solid state, mitigating self-quenching.
Conclusions:
- The N-BOH unit is effective in creating easily tunable, high-luminescent organic materials.
- Heteroaromatic polycyclic azaborines with N-BOH units offer promising solid-state luminescence.
- The observed large Stokes shifts in solid-state fluorescence are advantageous for preventing self-quenching effects.

Preparation of 1° Amines: Azide Synthesis
Azide ions act as good nucleophiles and react with unhindered alkyl halides to form alkyl azides. Alkyl azides do not participate in further nucleophilic substitution reactions, thereby eliminating the chances of polyalkylated products. Alkyl azides are reduced by hydride-based reducing agents, like lithium aluminum...
