Relationship between urinary incontinence symptoms and urodynamic findings using a validated Arabic questionnaire
The Arabic Urogenital Distress Inventory-6 (UDI-6) questionnaire shows significant correlation with urodynamic study (UDS) findings in Arabian women with urinary incontinence. This tool is particularly effective for assessing stress urinary incontinence (SUI).
Area of Science:
- Urology
- Gynecology
- Diagnostic Tools
Background:
- Urinary incontinence is a prevalent condition, especially among women.
- Urodynamic studies (UDS) are accurate for assessing urinary incontinence.
- The Arabic version of the Urogenital Distress Inventory-6 (UDI-6) lacks prior correlation with UDS in Arabian patients.
Purpose of the Study:
- To establish the correlation between the Arabic UDI-6 questionnaire and UDS findings.
- To validate the Arabic UDI-6 as a diagnostic tool for urinary incontinence in Arabian women.
Main Methods:
- Prospective study conducted at a tertiary referral urology clinic.
- 87 female patients with urinary incontinence completed the Arabic UDI-6 and underwent UDS.
- Correlation analysis between Arabic UDI-6 scores and UDS diagnoses.
Main Results:
- The Arabic UDI-6 identified urge, stress, and mixed incontinence in 23%, 32%, and 45% of patients, respectively.
- UDS diagnosed urge, stress, and mixed incontinence in 30%, 42%, and 18% of patients, respectively.
- A significant correlation was found between Arabic UDI-6 responses and UDS diagnoses, with a correlation coefficient of 0.65 for SUI (P < .01) and 0.38 for urge incontinence (P < .01).
Conclusions:
- The validated Arabic UDI-6 demonstrates significant correlation with UDS findings in Arabian women.
- The questionnaire is particularly effective in assessing stress urinary incontinence (SUI).
- Limitations include a small sample size and lack of comorbidity evaluation.
