Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Microbiology

Background:

  • Tuberculosis (TB) is a significant global health issue, primarily causing pneumonia.
  • Middle ear infections are rare manifestations of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, seen in 0.04-0.09% of chronic otitis media cases.

Observation:

  • A case study of a young woman with tuberculosis of the middle ear is presented.
  • Empiric therapy proved ineffective for this patient.

Findings:

  • A definitive diagnosis was achieved through surgical sampling and culture examination.
  • This process was essential for initiating effective treatment.

Implications:

  • Surgical sampling is recommended for chronic otitis media cases resistant to conventional therapies.
