Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess static standing balance in noninstitutionalized elderly women.
  • To evaluate the impact of visual input and footwear on balance.
  • To examine age-related changes in balance performance.

Main Methods:

  • 71 noninstitutionalized elderly women aged 60-86 participated.
  • Two timed balance tests were used: sharpened Romberg and one-legged stance.
  • Balance was tested under four conditions: eyes open/closed, shoes on/off.

Main Results:

  • Balance performance was significantly better with eyes open than eyes closed.
  • One-legged stance time decreased significantly with increasing age.
  • No significant differences were found for limb dominance or footwear.

Conclusions:

  • Visual input is critical for maintaining static balance in older women.
  • Age is a significant factor in reduced one-legged stance ability.
  • Further research on elderly balance maintenance is warranted.
