Heart failure patients with APOE ε4 alleles showed no significant differences in memory or BDNF levels. Further research is needed to understand genetic and cognitive factors in heart failure (HF) patients.
Area of Science:
- Neuroscience
- Genetics
- Cardiology
Background:
- Memory loss affects 23-50% of heart failure (HF) patients.
- The apolipoprotein E (APOE) gene, particularly the ε4 allele, is linked to cognitive function.
- Understanding the APOE ε4 allele's role in HF-related memory issues is crucial.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine the frequency of APOE gene variants in HF patients.
- To assess if APOE ε4 allele presence impacts memory and serum BDNF levels.
- To estimate the effect sizes and confidence intervals of these associations.
Main Methods:
- Pilot study with 29 HF patients (26 completed).
- Measured recall and delayed recall memory at baseline and 12 weeks.
- Collected serum for brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) analysis at baseline and 8 weeks.
Main Results:
- Seven patients (24.1%) carried the APOE ε4 allele.
- No significant differences in memory or serum BDNF levels were observed between APOE ε4 carriers and non-carriers.
- Effect sizes were small to medium, with low precision indicated by confidence intervals.
Conclusions:
- The APOE ε4 allele did not significantly affect memory or BDNF levels in this pilot HF cohort.
- Larger studies are required to elucidate the interplay between genetic, cognitive, and clinical factors in HF.
- Further investigation into genotypic and neuropsychological variables influencing cognitive training response is warranted.
