This case report details a rare instance of Kimura disease occurring alongside lupus nephritis in an elderly male patient. Early recognition of potential concurrent lupus nephritis is crucial for managing Kimura disease patients with immunologic abnormalities.
Area of Science:
- Nephrology
- Immunology
- Rheumatology
Background:
- Kimura disease is a rare chronic inflammatory condition characterized by peripheral eosinophilia and elevated serum IgE.
- Nephropathy is a frequent complication of Kimura disease.
Observation:
- A 72-year-old male presented with recurrent lymphadenopathy, renal lesions, and immunologic abnormalities.
- The patient was diagnosed with concomitant Kimura disease and lupus nephritis.
Findings:
- The patient's condition was successfully managed using a treatment regimen including gamma immunoglobulin, intravenous pulse methylprednisolone, hydroxychloroquine, and prednisone.
- This case represents the first documented instance of Kimura disease co-occurring with lupus nephritis.
Implications:
- This report underscores the necessity of considering lupus nephritis in the differential diagnosis of patients presenting with Kimura disease and immunologic abnormalities.
- Prompt identification and management of concurrent conditions are vital for improving patient outcomes in complex autoimmune and inflammatory disorders.
