Area of Science:

  • Dentistry
  • Prosthodontics
  • Biomaterials

Background:

  • Severe resorption of the edentulous maxilla presents challenges in complete denture fabrication.
  • Increased inter-ridge distance can lead to heavy maxillary prostheses, causing patient discomfort and clinical issues.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe an alternative technique for hollowing maxillary complete dentures.
  • To address the clinical problem of heavy dentures in patients with extreme maxillary resorption.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized a clear template of the trial denture.
  • Created a gelatin cavity form within the denture base.
  • Employed a hollowing technique to reduce prosthesis weight.

Main Results:

  • The hollowing technique ensures even thickness of denture base resins, maintaining structural integrity.
  • The method effectively reduces the overall weight of the maxillary complete denture.
  • Facilitated fabrication of a lighter, more comfortable maxillary prosthesis.

Conclusions:

  • This alternative hollowing approach offers a viable solution for fabricating maxillary complete dentures in cases of extreme resorption.
  • The technique improves the clinical outcome by reducing prosthesis weight and ensuring structural integrity.
  • It provides a method to manage the challenges associated with increased inter-ridge distance in complete denture patients.
