The Rh factor may predict radiosensitivity to ionizing radiation. Rh-positive individuals showed a higher frequency of micronuclei (MN) after irradiation compared to Rh-negative individuals.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between the Rh factor and radiosensitivity.
  • To determine if the Rh factor can serve as a predictive marker for radiation response.

Main Methods:

  • An experimental study involving 50 healthy young adults (22-23 years old) with blood group A (25 Rh+ and 25 Rh-) in Babol, Iran.
  • Peripheral blood samples were analyzed using the cytokinesis-block micronucleus (CBMN) assay to measure the frequency of micronuclei (MN) and nuclear division index (NDI) after gamma irradiation.
  • Statistical analysis included independent and paired samples t-tests using SPSS version 18.

Main Results:

  • A statistically significant increase in micronuclei (MN) frequency was observed in Rh-positive individuals (196 ± 18.23) compared to Rh-negative individuals (169 ± 17.11) post-irradiation (p<0.001).

  • Further research is warranted to validate the Rh factor's role in predicting radiosensitivity.
