Background:

  • Spinal cord injury (SCI) often results in significant motor deficits.

Observation:

  • A 19-year-old male with chronic C4 complete SCI (ASIA A) participated in 10 sessions of HAL suit-assisted treadmill training.
  • The training utilized the HAL suit's cybernic autonomous control for physical support during walking.
  • Safety measures included support from medical professionals for balance and weight-bearing.

Findings:

  • Significant improvements were observed in walking distance and duration.
  • Walking distance increased from 25.2 meters to 148.3 meters.
  • Walking time increased from 7.6 minutes to 15 minutes.
  • Muscle spasticity, measured by the modified Ashworth scale (mAs), decreased post-training.
  • No adverse events necessitated the discontinuation of rehabilitation.

Implications:

  • Hybrid Assistive Limb (HAL) robotic suit training is a feasible intervention for chronic complete C4 quadriplegia.
  • This approach demonstrates potential for enhancing functional mobility and reducing spasticity in SCI patients.
  • Further research is warranted to explore the long-term benefits and broader applicability of HAL training in SCI rehabilitation.
