This study introduces a new model for optimizing elective surgery scheduling in private clinics, improving resource use and reducing patient stays. The integrated approach considers patient flow and surgeon availability for efficient healthcare operations.
Area of Science:
- Operations Research
- Healthcare Management
- Applied Mathematics
Background:
- Healthcare facilities face challenges in optimizing surgical scheduling.
- Private clinics have unique constraints, including independent surgeons.
- Efficient resource utilization is crucial for cost-effectiveness and patient care.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop and evaluate models for an Integrated Elective Surgery-Scheduling Problem (IESSP).
- To optimize resource allocation (beds, operating rooms) and patient sequencing.
- To minimize patient length of stay and overnight stays.
Main Methods:
- Formulation of two Mixed Integer Linear Programs (MILP) for the IESSP.
- Modeling the problem as a hybrid flow-shop with recirculation, synchronization, dedicated machines, and blocking.
- Empirical testing on real-world data from Clinique Ennasr and synthetic instances.
Main Results:
- The proposed MILP models effectively address the complexities of surgery scheduling.
- The models successfully minimized average patient length of stay and overnight stays.
- Instances with up to 44 surgical cases were solved within reasonable CPU time.
Conclusions:
- The developed MILP models provide an efficient solution for integrated elective surgery scheduling.
- The approach is applicable to private healthcare facilities with independent surgeons.
- The findings contribute to improved operational efficiency and patient management in surgical settings.
