Holter Monitor: 24-Hour Monitoring01:23

Holter Monitor: 24-Hour Monitoring

3.7K
Holter monitoring is a continuous electrocardiography (ECG) recording that tracks the heart's electrical activity over an extended period, generally 24 to 48 hours. This noninvasive diagnostic tool detects irregular heart rhythms that may not be captured during a standard ECG performed in a clinical setting.DeviceThe Holter monitor is a portable, small device connected to several electrodes on the patient's chest. These electrodes detect the heart's electrical signals and transmit them to the...

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Medical Devices

Background:

  • The use of implantable loop recorders (ILRs) has evolved from diagnosing infrequent palpitations and syncope.
  • Current applications extend to more complex cardiac conditions requiring long-term monitoring.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore the expanding and rare indications for implantable loop recorders.
  • To discuss emerging applications in diverse clinical scenarios.

Main Methods:

  • Review of current literature and clinical practice regarding implantable loop recorder utilization.
  • Focus on specific complex indications and future potential uses.

Main Results:

  • ILRs are increasingly used for rhythm monitoring post-atrial fibrillation ablation and after cryptogenic stroke.
  • Emerging applications include arrhythmia detection post-myocardial infarction, post-catheter valve interventions, and in heart failure and cardiomyopathies.

Conclusions:

  • The scope of implantable loop recorders is broadening to address complex cardiac conditions.
  • Enhanced device capabilities may further expand their clinical utility in various settings.
