Background:

  • Water-occluding earplugs are commonly used to prevent ear infections in individuals with external and middle ear conditions.
  • Limited data exists on the comparative effectiveness of these earplugs under prolonged water exposure.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess and compare the water impermeability of various earplug materials when subjected to extended water exposure.
  • To identify earplug materials that provide reliable water occlusion for extended periods.

Main Methods:

  • Nine different earplug materials were tested, including cotton wool variations, Blu-Tack, foam, silicone putty, silicone earplugs, flanged earplugs, and custom silicone moulds.
  • A standardized testing apparatus simulated the ear canal, measuring water loss over three hours using computer software.
  • Each material underwent five replicate tests to ensure reliability of the water permeability data.

Main Results:

  • Significant variations in water permeability were observed across tested materials.
  • Cotton wool mixed with petroleum jelly exhibited the most rapid and substantial water leakage.
  • Foam earplugs, silicone putty, and both soft and hard silicone custom-moulds demonstrated complete water impermeability throughout the testing period.

Conclusions:

  • Commonly used ear-occluding materials display a broad spectrum of water permeabilities during prolonged water immersion.
  • The traditional recommendation of using cotton wool mixed with petroleum jelly for water protection is likely ineffective for extended water exposure durations.
