    Summary

    Intrauterine devices (IUDs) may prevent pregnancy by stimulating immune cells in the uterus. Activated macrophages and B lymphocytes on IUDs can recognize foreign antigens, potentially triggering a reaction against a developing embryo.

    • Cells isolated from removed IUDs were analyzed using monoclonal antibodies and the avidin-biotin method.
    • Activated macrophages (CD 14+, transferrin receptor+) and B lymphocytes (IgA+, IgG+) were identified.
    • These immune cells expressed transplantation antigens class II, enabling recognition of foreign (paternal) antigens.
