Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) may directly affect muscle tissue, causing conditions like polymyositis and myopathy in AIDS patients. Alternative infectious causes were ruled out in these reported cases.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is an advanced stage of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection.
  • Muscular diseases can be a complication of various chronic illnesses.

Observation:

  • Three cases of AIDS patients presenting with muscular disease are detailed.
  • Two patients exhibited acute polymyositis, while one had severe noninflammatory myopathy.

Findings:

  • Diagnostic tests excluded other infectious etiologies for the observed muscular conditions.
  • The findings suggest a potential direct tropism of HIV for muscle tissue.

Implications:

  • HIV may have a direct pathogenic role in the development of myopathies in affected individuals.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Further research is warranted to understand the mechanisms of HIV-induced muscle damage.
