Summary

Cervical spine injuries in children are uncommon but serious, often involving associated or neurologic injuries. While nonoperative treatment is frequently successful, surgical stabilization is recommended for specific severe cases.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Retrospective review of 24 consecutive pediatric cervical spine injury cases.

  • The incidence of these injuries was 1.2 cases per year.
  • Associated injuries were present in 38% and neurologic injuries in 29%, with two fatalities.

  • Nonoperative treatment succeeded in 95% of cases, but 14% developed late kyphotic deformities.

Conclusions:

  • Surgical stabilization is advised for flexion injuries with late sequelae.
  • Compression (burst) fractures with neurologic involvement also warrant surgical intervention.
