Summary

Upward pulling plus exercise significantly reduced scapulocostal pain and improved scapular positioning in a patient with severe pain. This exercise may be a primary treatment for scapulocostal pain.

Background:

  • Scapulocostal pain is a common condition affecting the area around the shoulder blade.
  • Scapular malposition can contribute to pain and dysfunction.

Observation:

  • A 22-year-old female presented with severe bilateral scapulocostal pain.
  • Measurements included scapular position (horizontal distance from inferior angle to spine) and pain levels.

Findings:

  • Upward pulling plus exercise led to a significant reduction in scapulocostal pain (to 2/10).
  • The exercise intervention also decreased the horizontal distance from the inferior angle to the spinal process, indicating improved scapular alignment.

Implications:

  • Upward pulling combined with shoulder retraction exercise shows promise as a therapeutic intervention.
  • This approach may be recommended for managing scapulocostal pain and scapulocostal syndrome.
