    Summary

A nearly 13-year-old girl developed staphylococcal endocarditis and subsequent reversible leucocytopenia during high-dose oxacillin therapy. This case highlights a rare adverse effect of antibiotic treatment in pediatric infective endocarditis.

    Area of Science:

    • Cardiology
    • Infectious Diseases
    • Hematology

    Background:

    • Infective endocarditis is a serious infection affecting heart valves.
    • Staphylococcal endocarditis requires prompt and effective antibiotic treatment.

    Observation:

    • A pediatric patient with a ventricular septal defect presented with staphylococcal aortic valve endocarditis.
    • Treatment involved high-dose oxacillin therapy over several weeks.

    Findings:

    • The patient developed leucocytopenia (low white blood cell count) during oxacillin treatment.
    • This leucocytopenia was reversible upon discontinuation of the antibiotic therapy.

    Implications:

    • This case underscores a potential, albeit rare, adverse effect of oxacillin therapy in pediatric patients.
    • Awareness of antibiotic-induced leucocytopenia is crucial for managing infective endocarditis.
    • Further literature review is needed to understand the incidence and mechanisms of this complication.
