Never ignore extremely elevated D-dimer levels: they are specific for serious illness

Extremely elevated D-dimer (DD) levels, often considered non-specific, are strongly linked to severe conditions like venous thromboembolism (VTE), sepsis, and cancer. Maintaining clinical suspicion for serious underlying disease is crucial even with isolated high DD results.

- Clinical vigilance for serious conditions should be maintained even when extremely high D-dimer appears as an isolated finding.
