    Area of Science:

    • Pulmonary Medicine
    • Cardiology

    Context:

    • Chronic bronchitis and passive pulmonary hypertension share overlapping symptoms such as cough, sputum, and dyspnea.
    • Clinical differentiation between these conditions can be challenging due to similar physical findings.

    Purpose:

    • To re-evaluate diagnoses in patients initially presenting with chronic bronchitis.
    • To determine the prevalence of misdiagnosed passive pulmonary hypertension in this cohort.

    Summary:

    • A review of 42 patients diagnosed with chronic bronchitis revealed that 67% had confirmed chronic bronchitis.
    • However, 19% were newly diagnosed with passive pulmonary hypertension, and 14% had a combined diagnosis.

    Impact:

    • Highlights the potential for misdiagnosis between chronic bronchitis and passive pulmonary hypertension.
