Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Pediatrics
  • Sports Science

Background:

  • Spain faces a high prevalence of childhood obesity, ranking third in Europe.
  • This necessitates targeted intervention programs promoting healthy eating and physical activity (PA).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review intervention programs for healthy eating and PA in Spanish primary school children.
  • To analyze the impact of these interventions on body composition, dietary habits, and PA levels.

Main Methods:

  • A systematic review of articles published between 2000 and 2015.
  • Searches conducted across Web of Science, Scopus, Dialnet, PubMed, ERIC, SPORTDiscus, and PsycINFO databases.
  • Independent review by two researchers, with 7 studies meeting inclusion criteria from an initial 813 articles.

Main Results:

  • Interventions showed positive effects on body composition in less than half of the analyzed studies.
  • Nearly all programs positively influenced dietary behaviors, such as fruit intake.
  • Interventions were effective in increasing physical activity (PA) levels.

Conclusions:

  • Intervention programs demonstrate potential for improving children's health outcomes.
  • Positive impacts on dietary habits and physical activity are consistently observed.
  • Further research is needed to optimize interventions for body composition improvements.
