Communication

Communication between two animals occurs when one animal transmits an information signal that causes a change in the animal that receives the information. Organisms communicate with one another in a host of different ways. Signals can be auditory, chemical, visual, tactile, or a combination of these. Communication is a critical behavioral adaptation that promotes survival, growth, and reproduction.

Summary

The Resident Communication Skills Curriculum (RCSC) improved resident communication skills, including handling difficult conversations and providing effective handoffs. Both resident self-assessments and faculty evaluations showed significant skill improvement throughout the program.

Background:

Effective communication is crucial in medical care and a key component of medical education.
Residency programs often determine their own communication skills training interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop and implement a formal Resident Communication Skills Curriculum (RCSC) for trainees.
To equip residents with essential communication skills for high-quality medical practice.

Main Methods:

A multidisciplinary group developed the RCSC using needs assessments, literature reviews, and Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education competencies.
The curriculum integrated didactic sessions, role-playing, and real-life experiences throughout residency.
Outcomes were assessed via resident self-reporting, surveys, and faculty evaluations.

Main Results:

Residents highly rated the curriculum (3.95-3.97/4.0).
Significant improvements in resident self-reported communication skills were observed in areas like consultations, handoffs, conflict resolution, and difficult conversations (P ≤ .002).
Faculty evaluations also showed marked improvement in resident skills over time (P < .001).

Conclusions:

A comprehensive, integrated communication skills curriculum for pediatrics residents was successfully implemented.
The curriculum demonstrated significant improvement in resident communication skills, supported by resident and faculty feedback.
The RCSC is a feasible program, utilizing existing resources effectively.
