Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is a type of cancer that occurs when there is an abnormal growth of skin cells, usually triggered by damage to the DNA within the skin cells. It is primarily caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or artificial sources like tanning beds. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer worldwide, and its incidence continues to rise.

Tumor Immunotherapy

Immunotherapy is a treatment that boosts or manipulates the immune system to fight diseases, including cancer. For instance, by stimulating an immune response through vaccinations against viruses that cause cancers, like hepatitis B virus and human papillomavirus, these diseases can be prevented. Nonetheless, some cancer cells can avoid the immune system due to their rapid mutation and division. The immune response to many cancers involves three phases: elimination, equilibrium, and escape.

Summary

Topical imiquimod may effectively treat invasive cutaneous melanoma. This case study shows complete histologic clearance of invasive melanoma after imiquimod treatment, suggesting a potential new therapeutic option.

Background:

Malignant melanoma incidence and mortality have risen over the last 50 years.
Wide local excision is the standard treatment for primary cutaneous melanomas.
Imiquimod has demonstrated efficacy in treating melanoma in situ.

Observation:

The study presents a case of invasive melanoma treated with topical imiquimod.
The patient received topical imiquimod for invasive cutaneous melanoma.

Findings:

Complete histologic clearance of invasive melanoma was achieved.
Topical imiquimod treatment resulted in successful eradication of the invasive melanoma.

Implications:

Topical imiquimod may be a viable treatment option for invasive cutaneous melanomas.
Further research is warranted to explore the role of imiquimod in invasive melanoma treatment.
This finding could lead to less invasive treatment strategies for melanoma.
