Teeth01:15

Teeth

2.0K
The formation of teeth, also known as odontogenesis, is a complex process that begins in utero, around the sixth week of embryonic development. There are three stages to this process: the bud stage, the cap stage, and the bell stage.
In the bud stage, the tooth germ (an aggregation of cells) starts to form in the developing jawbone. During the cap stage, the tooth germ differentiates into enamel organ, dental papilla, and dental sac, which will later develop into the tooth's enamel, dentin...

The Availability Heuristic01:08

The Availability Heuristic

7.2K
A heuristic is a general problem-solving framework (Tversky & Kahneman, 1974). You can think of these as mental shortcuts that are used to solve problems. Different types of heuristics are used in different types of situations, and the impulse to use a heuristic occurs when one of five conditions is met (Pratkanis, 1989):

Summary

US dentists continue to use dental amalgam, favoring its use over a ban. Environmental consciousness influences opinions on amalgam use and disposal methods like separators.

Area of Science:

  • Environmental Science
  • Dental Public Health
  • Materials Science

Background:

  • The Minamata treaty, established in 2013 by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), aims to reduce mercury use, including dental amalgam.
  • Dental amalgam, a widely used restorative material, contains mercury, raising environmental concerns.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess current dental amalgam usage patterns among US dentists.
  • To understand US dentists' opinions regarding dental amalgam.
  • To identify factors influencing dentists' amalgam use and perspectives.

Main Methods:

  • An electronic survey was distributed to 45,557 general dentists and 5,101 pediatric dentists.
  • The survey utilized a 12-question, 5-point Likert scale format.
  • Qualtrics™ software facilitated survey distribution, with three reminders sent to non-respondents.

Main Results:

  • Response rates were 5.2% for general dentists and 17.6% for pediatric dentists.
  • 62% of general dentists and 56% of pediatric dentists reported current amalgam use.
  • A majority of dentists opposed a ban on amalgam but supported amalgam separator installation; environmental consciousness correlated with support for both.

Conclusions:

  • The surveyed dentists generally support the continued use of dental amalgam.
  • Dentists' views on amalgam are influenced by factors such as environmental awareness.
  • Implementing policies to mitigate the environmental impact of dental amalgam is recommended.
