Youth with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) desire more provider engagement regarding their condition and treatment. Increased communication can improve ADHD medication adherence, especially for non-white and older youth.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric healthcare
- Child psychology
- ADHD patient-provider communication
Background:
- Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) significantly impacts youth development and requires ongoing management.
- Effective communication between pediatric providers and young patients is crucial for treatment adherence and understanding.
- Educational programs tailored to youth needs can enhance ADHD self-management.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate how adolescents with ADHD perceive communication with their pediatric healthcare providers.
- To assess self-reported adherence to ADHD medications among youth.
- To determine preferred locations for ADHD educational programs for young patients.
Main Methods:
- A study involving 70 families with youth (ages 7-17) diagnosed with ADHD.
- Youth participants were interviewed by a research associate.
- Parents completed demographic questionnaires to supplement youth interviews.
Main Results:
- One-third of interviewed youth desired more in-depth discussions about ADHD during pediatric visits.
- On average, youth reported having over eight questions regarding their ADHD and its treatment.
- A majority of youth expressed a preference for receiving ADHD education within their provider's office setting.
- Non-white and older youth participants showed significantly lower adherence rates to ADHD medications.
Conclusions:
- Pediatric providers should actively engage youth in discussions about ADHD and treatment during appointments.
- Addressing youth's questions and preferences for communication can foster better understanding and potentially improve ADHD management.
- Tailoring educational content and delivery methods to patient preferences may enhance program effectiveness.
