This case report details a rare instance of cardiac hydatid disease in a patient with a history of lung involvement. Surgical excision was successful, highlighting a rare presentation of this parasitic infection.

Background:

  • Hydatid disease, caused by Echinococcus granulosus, predominantly affects the liver and lungs.
  • Cardiac involvement is exceptionally rare, particularly in the absence of hepatic hydatidosis.

Observation:

  • A 47-year-old woman with a known lung hydatid cyst presented with a cardiac mass.
  • Imaging revealed a large (4.5 × 2.5 cm) heterogeneous mass in the right atrium, attached to the crista terminalis.
  • The mass did not obstruct the vena cavae.

Findings:

  • The patient underwent successful open-heart surgery via median sternotomy.
  • A cystic lesion was excised from the right atrial wall after hypertonic saline injection.
  • Histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of a hydatid cyst.
